The night starts with Smallville which somehow Cece has been able to get me interested in, which is amazing cause if you have seen the show it's definitely a show that belongs on the CW (which I think was the WB at one time), which is now called "the duece" here in Denver for whatever reason. The next 2 shows we catch after that are The Office which I've watched for a long time and after that 30 Rock which a friend got me into this last summer. Go to Digg or any blog regularly and 9 times out of 10 you will see the first comment inevitably contain this one word. These people are idiots that need to get punched in the back of the head. It's the equivalent of saying something like "that's what she said" (in a non-ironic way mind you). Do these people think they're witty? They're just doing something that a million people have done before and it wasn't even funny then. Matter of fact it has NEVER been funny or witty. So I guess if you take one thing from this I guess it should be that if you can't think of anything better than "First" for a comment then you probably shouldn't comment ... or procreate ... or breathe. The ending left a little to be desired, especially when put side to side with the games of today. But playing an old gameboy title reminded me just how much i actually love the old crappy 8 bit glory days. The times when you could hardly tell exactly what your character was supposed to be. So in honor of that I thought I would put up some videos inspired by my same love.

For some reason I was thinking that this video looked more like a game but after a second look it appears that I was slightly mistaken. The song is called "The League of Extraordinary Nobodies" and is off the album I'll Sleep When You're Dead. In case you are new to this rapper, he's pretty great and is head of one of my favorite indie hip hop labels Def Jux. Check it out if you can. Good stuff. There's no video so the following will have to do.

I can never just put one thing on here either. So this is a video I first saw when Cece, Doug and I were watching a Def Jux documentary called Revenge of the Robots and the following video was on the extras of the dvd. Think it's another great song by him and the video is superb in my opinion.

Hope the irony of the title of the post wasn't lost on you

Spreading Holiday Cheer

So while surfing the internet today I found one of the funniest slide shows that I have seen in a long time. The title of the slide show is called "Scared of Santa" and you might think that I am awful but seeing kids terrified of Santa is the essence of humor to me. Here is the link to what I believe is going to be one of the funniest things you are going to see this week. But if you are lazy, which believe me I'm not judging you because I am too, then I picked what I feel are the cream of the crop.
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The funny thing is that I don't really care for Saved by the Bell, not even when it came out many moons ago. I actually always thought it was weird that Slater only had dimples on one side of his face. Does that mean he has dimple? And Screech went from being supposedly a smart kid to a character who as my dad would say "could f*ck up a wet dream". Guess I just thought it was funny that a washed actor would be at a club with that kind of eye candy. Bet a lot of those girls were just being born when that show started. But if I knew that you guys would be subjected to that for months on end I probably would've been a little more hesitant to put that up. Hmmmm, you know I probably would have still posted it.
So many things have actually happened since that last post. Cece and I went to Chicago to see Lollapalooza this year and ended up staying with C's aunt one night and with my buddy Scott the rest of the time. That city is beautiful and the shows were awesome, especially RATM. I saw them way back in the day when they opened up for U2 on the Pop Mart tour and half the crowd were families at that show, so understandably only half of the crowd was into it. Given that, it was nice to see them at a show where they were the headliner and given the current political landscape, their message and their energy were as strong as ever.
We also had a party at our house the weekend after we returned from Chicago. It was a great time and we managed to kill every lick of alcohol that was brought to the house, which believe me was quite a feat. That night ended with Cece, Hilary and Melissa singing Journey at the top of their longs into empty bottles. Also never a man who disappoints (ever), good old Paul was "sober" enough to think it was a good idea to blow up his air mattress in his car parked in my driveway and sleep there. A lot of my neighbors are older, so I'm sure that wasn't weird at all to them and that they are not silently judging Cece and I. I will have to put pictures up from that party but currently Hillary has the pics, so it will have to wait for another posting. After that it's just been a pretty busy summer going to shows, visiting friends and what not.
So to end this post, I want to give a shout out to all my friends in C Springs. I feel like those guys have always kept me real and made me at least slightly street smart. Matter of fact Cece says that I almost switch my persona to some white guy trying to be urban when I'm talking to my buddy Tyler. So to show all you guys I'm thinking about you, I give you Mr. Spriggs Barbeque.

See more funny videos at Funny or Die

I think the reason it reminds of the Springs is pretty self explanatory. After some thought about it I thought I would put up some videos that I'm guessing you should find interesting. The first one is not a new song but I think you will understand why I love it. Especially at the end when you see how they did it. I actually originally saw this video on a RES Magazine dvd but thought about it again when Cece and I went to see Ladytron at the Gothic Theater. A group called Datarock opened up for them and they had a song called Computer Camp Love which was the catalyst for me remembering this video. It's by a group called Grandaddy and the song is called "Jed's Other Poem"

I'm sure it's not surprising why that video caught my eye. I also wanted to include the Datarock video as well.

Here's a video that I fricking love. There's something awesome about slow motion violence. It's a little bit of a build up but when you get to 1:45 that's when it starts getting interesting. And when 2:12 rolls around I'm actually cackling.

Because the people's faces move so crazily Cece doesn't think that the footage is real. I other hand know that it looks like that because it's extreme slow motion. I actual saw a brainiac episode that showed somebody getting bitch slapped and somebody breaking a block of wood both in super slow motion. They look a lot like the Robyn video.

This is a pretty cool video and is very different than most of the videos that I actually seek out. It's from Portishead's newest album Third and the song is called "The Rip". I always appreciate animation and I bet this took forever to finish. I also bet it was done entirely by hand (or at least it looks that way). The song itself I feel gets really good at the 2:20 mark.

For the last video I wanted to have it be a little lighter so I am leaving you with a video that I think is pure comic genius. Please watch it till the very end, it's worth it.

One other music video that I really wanted to put on this post was DJ Rupture's video "Flop We". I just couldn't find it, so if you think you might have better luck than me then you shouldn't definitely try to find it. It's a great video and a cool song.

Buffalo, Wyoming .... More Than a One Horse Town

This 4th of July Weekend Cece and I went up to Buffalo, Wyoming so that I could meet her family and also so I could see the place that shaped the woman I love. Traffic going up was OK and as always cleared out as soon as we got past Fort Collins and Cheyenne. The only hiccup on the drive up was Charlie throwing up 3 times in the Cece's car on the way up. This resulted in windows immediately being rolled down and Cece trying to not crash as she was dry heaving.

I ended up liking the town quite a bit and felt that it definitely had charm. I can see why C holds it so dear to her heart. The downtown was small but was a nice downtown area for a mountain town. The backdrop is the Big Horn Mountains and being from Colorado Springs I definitely appreciate having mountains to the west.

On the 4th Cece's Mom, Cece and I went to Billings, Montana (which was a couple of hours away) to do a little shopping. I was informed that in that area of the state traveling a couple hours anywhere is not out of the ordinary. We had some lunch, found a couple things to buy and headed back to Buffalo that evening. The next day Cece decided to show me around the town. We went to Dash Inn for lunch and had some delicious dashburgers (yes Cece had one too) with potato wedges. After that we drove around the park, saw all the schools she went to and she also showed me all the houses she lived in. After this was done we decided to get a drink downtown and went to the Occidental. The bar has an old west historic feel which i actually liked and felt that it was definitely appropriate. After putting a couple back a couple of Cece's friends who were in town for a wedding met us at the bar. They were very funny and had a bunch of stories that reminded me of my friends.

After we left there we continued home to Cece's family house and they made a nice dinner. That night we ended up playing Texas Hold Em (C's dad got all our money) and Dominoes (where i made a new record for worst score in WYO history). Cece's family was very welcoming and nice and made the stay very enjoyable for me. The drive back wasn't too bad except for a couple spots and Charlie didn't up chuck on the home (amazing what a difference that makes for the drive). Joe and Hillary had to drop somebody off at DIA so they ended up meeting us at the house once we got home and we had some dinner, drinks and played some Mario Kart.

Thanks Cece and Cece's Family for making this a very enjoyable and pleasant weekend!!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://monkeys-n-robots.blogspot.com/2008/07/buffalo-wyoming-more-than-one-horse.html' title='Buffalo, Wyoming .... Apparently due to the popularity of the movie Star Wars: A New Hope, some public relations people must have decided that it would be a good idea to use the movie to help spread messages that would benefit everybody. Unfortunately they decided to do this through Public Service Announcements. The finished product is an abomination to the movie I hold so dear. I have only found two so far but I would not be surprised to find out that more exist (possibly even for the later movies). But who knows, maybe they realized the err of their ways after producing these turd nuggets.

Drinking and driving PSA

Holy Crap!!! Who green lighted this? I like how they seemed to actually make the Cantina scene way more ghetto. Wouldn't be surprised if I saw zippers on the alien costumes. I like at :12 that the alien is actually acting a little obnoxious while trying to get another drink. Then at :13 he goes from making his own sounds to imitating a wookie. Could they really not find a better sound than that of one of their main characters. But the icing on this turd cake is the announcer saying "When friends drink too much, even in galaxies far far away ...". Uggghhh.

Smoking PSA

What exactly is R2-D2 doing in the back ... seems like he might be partying from the sounds that I'm hearing at the beginning of this clip. Waiting for him to start playing some Dead or Phish and talk about the notes that they're NOT playing. I like that R2-D2 is sick of being with the hoytie toytie C3PO and decides to rebel by smoking. I would probably start drinking, smoking, whatever if I had to be around the machine equivalent of a prim and proper british douche. R2 must have had enough of C3PO asking if he would "care for some tea govner?" What genius decided that the perfect people to help show the dangers of smoking would be two robots?

So there you have it probably two of the worst things (not counting Star Wars Christmas Special) to be associated with the Star Wars franchise.

Teenage Memories

It was 1992 and my sophmore year of high school. My parents had finally got cable and I was basking in all of its brainwashing goodness. It was a time when MTV was still relevant and amazingly enough still played videos. That being true I was guilty of watching the channel a decent amount back then without the slightest feeling of shame. I believe it was a Saturday afternoon when I first ran across a show that would solidify my love for the animated medium. The show I am referring to is called Liquid Television. The show was quite the experience and unfortunately probably one of the first steps the channel was making to make the "M" in their name completely useless and unnecessary. This show was full of animated shorts that ran the gambit from avant garde to goofy to even provocative. As with anything there was some crap on on it but it was far outweighed by awesome content. Liquid Telivision would also prove to be the point of origin for some pop culture staples. Aeon Flux first started on this show and a little show called Beavis and Butthead started as a short called "Frog Baseball" on this show as well. Oh man, I remember seeing the duo, who were even more crudely drawn in this short, bat a frog across the screen and I knew they were on to something. But I'm digressing. I guess the reason I even decided to write this blog is because I just recently remembered a particular short I saw on this show and felt like I need to share it with whoever might enjoy it as well.

This particular short was called "The Running Man" and it must have done something to me if I'm writing a blog about 16 years later. It was made by Yoshiaki Kawajiri who I believe also did animation on Ninja Scroll and the Animatrix for you anime fans out there. I remember this short instantly caught my attention with its crazy and dark visuals and interesting and also equally as dark subject matter.

The story is about Zach Hugh, the undefeated champion of the "Death Circus" racing circuit. It's a futuristic race where the competitors ride around in what looks like cars out of the nintendo game F-Zero. The short is very stylized in appearance and extremely trippy (especially in the race scenes). Like any good story when it was over it left me completely silent reflecting on what i just saw. There's plenty more that I could divulge about this story but my main goal is to just spark interest in what I think is a great story.

I was originally going to include youtube videos on this blog but I found out that Viacom took them down due to copyright infringement. But good news I found out this short is also on a dvd called Neo Tokyo and that it is available on Netflix. Due yourself a favor and check this and Yoshiaki's other work out. I think you won't be disappointed.

"Head under water ... and you tell me to breathe to breathe easy ... for a while.
I'm NOT gonna write you a love song ... cause you ask for it ... cause you need one ... you see"

....

"I do if it for love ... love ... love"

KAKAKKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKKAKAKKAKAKKAKAKA!!!!!!!
